Why am I discouraged?
Why is my heart so sad?
I will put my hope in God!
I will praise him again—
my Savior and my God…

There were no blacksmiths in the land of Israel in those days.
The Philistines wouldn’t allow them
for fear they would make swords and spears for the Hebrews.
One day Jonathan said to his armor bearer,
“Come on, let’s go over to where the Philistines have their outpost.”
To reach the Philistine outpost,
Jonathan had to go down between two rocky cliffs…
“Let’s go across to the outpost of these pagans,”
Jonathan said to his armor bearer.
“Perhaps the LORD will help us for nothing can hinder the LORD.
He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few!”
…and the Philistines fell before Jonathan,
and his armor bearer killed those who came behind them.
Suddenly, panic broke out in the Philistine army…
And just then an earthquake struck,
and everyone was terrified.
How precious is your unfailing love, O God!
All humanity finds shelter
in the shadow of your wings.
The LORD merely spoke,
and the heavens were created.
He breathed the word,
and all the stars were born.
He assigned the sea its boundaries
and locked the oceans in vast reservoirs.
Let the whole world fear the LORD,
and let everyone stand in awe of him.
For when he spoke, the world began!
It appeared at his command.
I will be glad and rejoice in your unfailing love,
for you have seen my troubles,
and you care about the anguish of my soul.
You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing.
You have taken away my clothes of mourning
and clothed me with joy,
that I might sing praises to you and not be silent.
O LORD my God,
I will give you thanks forever!
Listen to my prayer for mercy
as I cry out to you for help,
as I lift my hands toward your holy sanctuary.
